Buckle Collar
Generally speaking, the choice of a dog collar is a matter of personal preference by the
owner. It can be because the collar fits the dog well. It can be due to the fact that the collar is suitable for
the dog's age and training level. It can even be that fashion is in amongst the pets in the neighborhood.
No matter the reason behind the choosing of the buckle, the most important consideration is always the safety
and comfort of your pet dog. Keep in mind that dog collars are also sources of strangulation. Well, when it comes
to safety and comfort, the first thing that comes to mind for any loving pet owner is the buckle collar.
Collar Description
This is the most common and most basic type of collar, which is also called the flat color because of its
relative flatness in comparison with other types. Flat collars are manufactured from a variety of materials ranging
from nylon webbing and leather as the two most popular with polyester, hemp and metal as the less commonly
patronized amongst pet owners.
Flat collars either have buckles like those found in belt buckles or quick-release buckles. The purpose of
either one is to be able to let the collar fit snugly around the dog's neck, which is very important especially in
smaller, friskier puppies. Most will come with a loop unto which a leash can be fastened - definitely a plus when
walking my dog.
You choice of either going for the belt buckle or the quick-release buckle will depend primarily on your dog's
behavior. For friskier puppies, the quick-release buckle is preferable because it can be quickly detached once a
problem arises.
In my experience, the other beauty of a buckle collar is that it can also be a source of identification for the
dog. If you are a pet owner like me, losing your dog and then not having someone return it because there was no
identification anywhere on my dog in the first place is an absolute nightmare, one that could have been prevented
had I thought of it in the first place. Ask the provider to have your dog's identification as well your contact
number stamped/embroidered on the collar.
Suitable Dogs
For most instances, a flat collar is the best choice for most dogs. This is because this is probably the fastest
one to attach, the easiest to use with a leash and the most useful in terms of identification. In fact, most pet
owners will have at least one type of flat buckle in their dog's collection.
From what I have observed through years of owning puppies, they are usually safest with buckle collars precisely
because of the fit and the size. A buckle collar is good for training and walking small puppies as a leash can be
attached to it, which minimizes on the possibility of yanking on the poor animals.
As previously mentioned, choosing the right size and fit of the buckle collars is very important especially in
frisky breeds. The dogs can choke, gag and become entrapped when getting too excited around other dogs, thus,
leading to higher risks for tracheal damage if and when the flat collar is improperly fitted. Indeed, it is
important to always choose the buckle collar with the right length that allows for adjustments on either
direction.
